I found the garage where these VW Beetles were back in 1989, when I was at art college studying photography. It's all but gone now, with justa few cars left in the back yard but I took some of the best shots I have ever taken there and owe Des Jones (the garage owner) a debt of thanks for letting me wander around and spend a few days taking shots. The original was shot on a Bronic 645 camera, on Kodak Tri-X film and then printed on Agfa record Rapid Grade 3 paper. It was then selenium toned; split toned - which gives the shadows a lot of testure and a deep purple tone.
One day at college.... all my negatives were stolen and I have just a few left of this shoot. This version was saved from the disaster and scanned in and given as similar a treatment in the computer as I got with the chemicals in the lab. I added a few bits and pieces - the red text etc - just because they seemed to look good with the image.
It's become a signature shot for me and is on the front page of my website, on my business cards and I have sold a few over the years to VW fanatics.
It's a real personal favourite too. I hope youlike it
